TRIBUTE TO CARNELL MARIE SMITH
WHEREAS, Almighty God, in His Infinite Wisdom, has granted Carnell Marie Smith, an outstanding citizen and member of her community, eternal rest on February 16, 2013; and
WHEREAS, On September 7, 1941, Carnell Marie Smith started her life journey in Emerson, Arkansas as one of the daughters of the late Gulver and Esther Ballard Caldwell. After migrating to this city, she grew up on the West Side. After graduating from Farragut High School in 1958, she married Curtis Whitehead, Sr. and, to this union, a son and two daughters were born. Later in life, she married J.B. Smith, Jr. and added a son to her family; and
WHEREAS, More than three decades ago, Carnell Marie Smith moved to the Englewood community. Although she was one of the Number One salespeople for Primera Insurance Company, she found time to be an active member of the community, serving with the Lindblom Park Advisory Board, the C.A.P.S. program, and working at the polls on election days. She also worked for the Community Economic & Development Assistance programs, helping families recieve grants to help pay utility bills and meet their other financial obligations; and
WHEREAS, Carnell Marie Smith donated time, energy, and financial support to various non-for-profit organizations such as Chicago Southside Sarcoidosis Support Group and Beverly Martial Arts. In her leisure time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, going on road trip, playing bid whist, listening to gospel music and the blues, watching "Dancing with the Stars" and cooking; and
WHEREAS, Carnell Marie Smith leaves behind to celebrate her memory her sisters, Gulverstine Caldwell and Azzie Lee Patterson; her four children, Curtis Whitehead, Jr., Desiree Lanell Mack-Hardin, Tina Louise Smith, and Tjuan Lamar Smith; seven grandchildren, Este, Margie, Keosha, Crystal, Kendra, Nadea, and Curtis Lamar as well as her three great-grandchildren Phoenix, Journee, and Trinity along with her loving nieces, nephews an...
