TO THE HONORABLE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO
Ladies and Gentlemen:
1 transmit herewith a resolution supporting the human rights movement in Iran. Your favorable consideration ofthis resolution will be appreciated.
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On September 16, 2022, protests began in Iran as a response to the Iranian government's brutal murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for wearing a hijab "improperly"; and
WHEREAS, Over 400 protesters, including at least 60 minors, have been killed and over 14,000 have been arrested by the Iranian government; and
WHEREAS, Since 1979, the Government of Iran has committed numerous acts of violence and human rights violations against its own people, particularly against women and youth; and
WHEREAS, The government of Iran has restricted the people's access to internet, phone, and other forms of communication; and
WHEREAS, The Iranian protesters are fighting for democracy over a theocratic dictatorship; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this fourteenth day of December 2022, do hereby
stand with our Iranian-American community members, particularly Iranian-American women, as their relatives and associates are suffering through the current human rights injustices in Iran;
condemn the Government of Iran and the violent acts that are being perpetrated against the Iranian people;
advocate for a special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council regarding the atrocities being committed in Iran;
call upon the United Nations to urge Iran to end sentencing and execution of protesters without fair trials;
urge the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women to create a report on the crisis in Iran;
urge the United Nations Member States to heed the call of Iranian women and remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the United Nations Commission on...
