RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Bess Myerson has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Bess Myerson was a beauty queen and television personality who later served in the administrations of two New York mayors; and
 
WHEREAS, Born in the Bronx, New York, to Russian immigrant parents, Bess Myerson was an aspiring pianist and flutist who graduated with honors and a degree in music from Hunter College; and
 
WHEREAS, Bess Myerson won the Miss America crown in 1945 and became a symbol of pride for Jewish Americans as the nation emerged from the horrors of the Holocaust that were committed during the World War II era; and
 
WHEREAS, Bess Myerson went on to become a game show hostess and panelist and was a regular on the celebrity quiz show I've Got A Secret before entering public service in the 1960s; and
 
WHEREAS, Considered one of the most powerful women in New York City politics, Bess Myerson served as Consumer Affairs Commissioner for Mayor John Lindsay and as Cultural Affairs Commissioner for Mayor Edward Koch; and
 
WHEREAS, The ,hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Bess Myerson serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, Bess Myerson will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To her daughter, Barra Grant, Bess Myerson imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of January, 2015, do hereby commemorate Bess Myerson for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Bess Myerson.
