Whereas, Ella Jenkins, who is known internationally as the First Lady of Children's Music, is a long time resident of the City of Chicago and a contributor to the multi-cultural heritage of the City, and
Whereas, Ella Jenkins produced her first album in 1957 , Call-And-Respond: Rhythmic Group Singing and has produced 39 other CD's through the Smithsonian Folkways label, including the 1995 album Multicultural Children's Songs, which is the most popular Smithsonian Folkways release to date, and
Whereas, as a performer and educator, Ella Jenkins has traveled extensively in the US and abroad, performing her songs on all seven continents, including Antarctica, and
Whereas, Jenkins has had a lasting impact on children's lives, as well as those of parents and fellow music educators, offering workshops on music education around the world; and
Whereas, Ella Jenkins is the recipient of a Grammy Nomination in 1999 for Best Musical Album for Children for Ella Jenkins and a Union of Friends, a Grammy Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, a Grammy for Best Musical Album for Children for Sharing Cultures with Ella Jenkins in 2005 and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for children for cELLAbration: A Tribute to Ella Jenkins in 2005, and
Whereas, Ella Jenkins has been a leading performer of children's music for fifty years and celebrated her 90Ul birthday on August 6, 2014, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council, gathered together this 10th Day of September, 2014 AD, to salute Ella Jenkins for her successful and extensive musical career, her contributions to the multi-cultural heritage of the City of Chicago, and to her dedication to the children of Chicago and the world, and extend our best wishes on the occasion of her 90th birthday, and
