RESOLUTION TO CONGRATULATE BISHOP VESTA LEWIS DIXON
WHEREAS, Bishop Vesta Lewis Dixon, outstanding citizen and spiritual leader of his community, has devoted 50 years building faith in this city's South Side neighborhood of Englewood and other communities; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 9, 1946, as the second of seven children, Bishop Vesta Lewis Dixon was called to the ministry at the age of 14 and was licensed at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cordova, Alabama where his family had relocated. At the age of 17, he was president of the Youth National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and subsequently brought about the closing of a segregated theatre in that town. At the age of 18, he was fully ordained; and
WHEREAS, Married for 46 years, Bishop Vesta Lewis Dixon is the father of five children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He moved his family to Chicago in 1967 where he united with the Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church. He assisted the pastor until the pastor retired in 1979 at which time he was elected to succeed him. From 1982, until the present, he has been the full-time shepherd of his flock; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Dixon, who, as a child of a large family, had at times gone hungry, established a feeding ministry and organized a coalition of 100 pastors in various zip codes throughout the Chicago area in order to create a food pantry to distribute federal government commodities. Being led by the Holy Spirit, he also united St. Mark Covenant Churches Fellowship (SMCCF) where, in 2004, he was consecrated as a bishop and elevated as an Illinois State SMCCF Bishop; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 6th Day of July, 2011 AD, do hereby congratulate Bishop Vesta Lewis Dixon on his Golden Jubilee as a minister and express our heartfelt thanks for his dedication and spiritual guidance to the congregants of the churches he serves as well as the people o...
