RESOLUTION



WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges; novelist, eassayist, port and diplomat, was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and,
WHEREAS, He received his Bachelor in Hispanic Philology from the University of Zaragoza, and his PhD in Latin American Literature from the Universidad de Madrid, Spain; and,
WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges published several prestigious award winning works: the novel Solo Cenizas Hallaras (Bolero); the books of poetry Juegos Reunidos, Durante los inviernos; and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges was editor of the Spanish journals Cam de I'Arpa as well as co-founder of Hora de Poesla; and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges has served as Spain's Director of the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica in the Dominican Republic; has worked as a professor of Latin American literature at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges gathered a group of prominent Chicagoans to serve as international observers for the 2004 Dominican Republic's Presidential election; the observers being Judge Abner Mikva, Congressman Edward J. Derwinski, University of Illinois-Chicago's Chancellor Sylvia Manning, Cook County Commissioner Roberto Maldonado; University of Illinois Vice Chancellor for International Affairs Allan Lerner and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges has been honored as Dominican Republic's Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Spain; Germany; Japan; and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges is the Dominican Republic's permanent Ambassador to the Organization of American States; was Chair of the Organization of American States; currently is President pro tempore of the System of Central America Integration (SICA); and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges has been distinguished by the King of Spain and the Emperor of Japan; and,

WHEREAS, Pedro L. Verges has often volunteered his services to the Dominican community of Chicago, especially through the Dominican American Midwest Association (DAMA); and,
