RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the members of the City Council ofthe City of Chicago, along with the rest of the world has followed the fate of Otto Warmbier; and
WHEREAS, on January 2016, Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, visited Pyongyang as part of a tour group and fell prey to a regime infamous throughout the world and time for its brutal human rights abuses and humanity-menacing military endeavors; and
WHEREAS, after a seventeen month detainment, on June 13, 2017, twenty-two year old Mr. Warmbier was returned to his Ohio family and passed away a week later; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Warmbier shall forever be remembered for his gregariousness and intelligence; and
WHEREAS, we now recall a quote from his 2013 salutatorian speech: "This is our season finale. This is the end of one great show, but just the beginning to hundreds of new spinoffs;" and
WHEREAS, amid our sorrow, this sentiment calls on us to develop what will forever have started as a heartrending series into one that spells hope for untold audiences and times to come; and
WHEREAS, the Members of this City Council hereby express our deep regret that Otto's vibrant life was brief but share in a commitment that it become a catalyst for lasting and effective efforts to deliver us from the threat emanating from that corner of the world; and
WHEREAS, the Council urges that leaders throughout the world channel Otto's fortitude and boldness in the fight against the evil forces that befell him; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Chicago hereby embraces Mr. Warmbier's legacy as one of fearlessness and bravery; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth/day of June, 2017, do hereby commemorate Otto Warmbier for his vibrant life and legacy and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOZVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of OttqflVarmbier. /
