Resolution in Honor of Lake Point Tower

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower is a high-rise condominium building located at 505 North Lake Shore Drive in the Streeterville neighborhood and is the only skyscraper in downtown Chicago east of Lake Shore Drive ; and

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower is one of Chicago's most recognized and architecturally distinguished skyscraper, recognized throughout the world for its gracefully undulating exterior; and

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower was completed in 1969 and was the tallest residential building in the world when it was built; and

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower was designed by John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, proteges of internationally renowned architect and Chicagoan Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; and

WHEREAS, Schipporeit-Heinrich, Inc., architects of Lake Point Tower, received a Distinguished Building Award from the Chicago Chapter of American Institute of Architects in 1969; and

WHEREAS, Schipporeit-Heinrich, Inc., received a National Honor Award for Lake Point Tower from the American Institute of Architects in 1970; and

WHEREAS, the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects recognized Lake Point Tower and Schipporeit-Heinrich, Inc. with its 25-Year Award for architectural excellence in 1994; and

WHEREAS, A 2007 American Institute of Architects survey listed Lake Point Tower among the 150 most popular buildings in the United States—one of only two residential buildings included in the listing; and

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower was the first residential building in a major city to have its own two-and-half acre private park which includes a playground, pool, duck pond, and waterfalls; and

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower was one of the first buildings in Chicago to incorporate a major green roof; and

WHEREAS, Lake Point Tower originally had 875 residential units and is home to over 1,200 Chicagoans; and
