RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Richard Pipes has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Richard Pipes was a renowned scholar of Russian history and an aide to President Ronald Reagan; and
WHEREAS, Born in Poland, Richard Pipes and his family fled the Nazi occupation during World War II and arrived in the United States in 1940; and
WHEREAS, Richard Pipes spent his academic career at Harvard University where he taught history from 1958 until his retirement in 1996; and
WHEREAS, A leading authority on the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, Richard Pipes served during the 1980s as Director of Eastern European and Soviet Affairs for the National Security Council; and
WHEREAS, Richard Pipes was a recipient of the 2007 National Humanities Medal bestowed by President George W. Bush; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Richard Pipes serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Richard Pipes was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Irene, his son, Daniel, and his beloved family, Richard Pipes imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Richard Pipes for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
