RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, on May 31, 2018 the Illinois General Assembly passed the Immigrant Tenant Protection Act and the Safe Zones Act; and
WHEREAS, the Immigrant Tenant Protection Act would prohibit landlords from harassing or discriminating against tenants solely on the basis of alienage; and
WHEREAS, the Safe Zones Act would provide protections against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests in sensitive locations such as schools, hospitals, and courthouses; and
WHEREAS, both bills have been transmitted to Governor of the State of Illinois, Bruce Rauner, for approval; and
WHEREAS, Illinois has developed a comprehensive framework of legal protections for immigrants including the Illinois Trust Act, prohibiting law enforcement officials across the State from detaining individuals based solely on their immigration status, which the Governor signed; and
WHEREAS, Illinois leaders must continue to advocate for stability in housing as an issue of human dignity; and
WHEREAS, Illinois leaders must continue to provide special protections for those in schools, hospitals, and seeking justice in the courts; and
WHEREAS, it has always been the cherished duty of local government to provide for the protection and safety of its residents, especially in times of federal inaction; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council do hereby urge the Governor of the State of Illinois, Bruce Rauner, to sign the Immigrant Tenant Protection Act and the Safe Zones Act; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the
