RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Educator Frank Trapani is being hailed by St. Richard School officials for coming to the assistance of a child who appeared to be choking on a piece of food in the school lunchroom; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in the United States, following poisonings, motor vehicle crashes and falls; and
WHEREAS, Foods are responsible for many choking incidents and choking can cause a simple coughing fit or even a complete blockage of the airway, which can lead to death; and
WHEREAS, Choking can result in brain damage or death, and serious harm can happen within minutes; and
WHEREAS, On Wednesday, December 16, 2015, a student at St. Richard School was choking on something he had eaten when Frank Trapani stepped up and applied the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the item from the student's throat; and
WHEREAS, As the child appeared to immediately recover, no call was made for an ambulance or emergency assistance; and
WHEREAS, Frank Trapani serves as a Social Studies and Religion teacher for grades six through eight and is a veteran member of the faculty at the school which is located in the Archer Heights community; and
WHEREAS, Frank Trapani's quick intervention is worthy of our admiration and esteem; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of February, 2016, do hereby recognize Frank Trapani for his decisive and lifesaving actions; and
