RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin was a widely admired member of the business community and the loving husband for 60 years of the late Bernice; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin was the much-adored father of Carol, Karen and the late Scott, the grandfather of four and the great-grandfather of six to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Leonard Lavin bravely served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and participated in numerous Pacific landings; and
WHEREAS, The founder of a beauty products empire, Leonard Lavin established the Alberto-Culver Company in 1955 after purchasing a small West Coast beauty supply company; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin built the company, which included Sally Beauty Supply, into an international concern that sold its products in 100 countries; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin was a generous philanthropist and a respected civic leader; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin served on the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Board of Directors where the hospital campus is home to the Lavin Pavilion and the Bernice E. Lavin Day Care Center; and
WHEREAS, The Lavins were also successful thoroughbred racing breeders and owned the 400-acre Glen Hill Farm in Ocala, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Lavin was the author of the book, Winners Make It Happen: Reflections of a Self-Made Man; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Leonard Lavin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Leonard Lavin to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
