MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR FRANK PIERCE GILES, SR.
WHEREAS, Frank Pierce Giles, Sr. recently went to his eternal resting place; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of Frank Pierce Giles, Sr.'s passing by the Honorable Anthony A. Beale, Alderman of the 9th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Frank Pierce Giles, Sr. was born on October 11, 1925, in Beaverdam, Virginia. William was the eldest of five children born to the late George and Gladys Giles. His siblings were Calvin, George, Sherman and Edith; and
WHEREAS, Frank attended the Virginia Public School System. He enlisted in the United States Army and served with distinction in the Philippines in World War II. For his valiant service he received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge on December 7, 1946; and
WHEREAS, Frank met Isabel M. Payne in Richmond, Virginia. They moved to Chicago, Illinois and were married at the Metropolitan Community Church where they were both members, on November 25, 1947. To that blessed union was born Gwendolyn Vanessa, Russell Ellis and Frank Pierce, Jr. They later joined St. James A.M.E. Church; and
WHEREAS, Frank attended plumbing school. He was hired as a plumber by the City of Chicago's Department of Housing in 1955. Eight years later he moved over to the City's Water Department. There he was the first African American to be promoted to District Foreman and became the North District Superintendent of Water Distribution supervising over 250 employees. He retired in June, 1992; and
WHEREAS, Frank was an entrepreneur who founded Dunbar Plumbing with a friend, which operated for many years. With his son Frank, Jr., he established F & G Plumbing, where they worked together until the passing of Frank, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Frank was very active in his 80's. He was a passionate bowler and member in several leagues. He also was an ardent golfer and was a member of the T-Birds Golfers, who would travel to golf...
