TRIBUTE TO GEORGE MITCHELL
WHEREAS, In His Infinite Wisdom, Almighty God granted George Mitchell, an outstanding restaurateur and esteemed member of his community, eternal rest and peace on July 7, 2011; and
WHEREAS. George Mitchell was born in Samos, Greece. He was the beloved husband of Angela Makris, the loving father of Aristidis and Maria Tsourapas, the proud grandfather of James and Peter, and the father-in-law of Bill Tsourapas; and
WHEREAS, George Mitchell was the owner of the Artists Cafe, a famous Michigan Avenue restaurant that has been the cornerstone of the landmark Fine Arts building since 1961. The restaurant, well known for its ambiance, has been a gathering place for many local and international artists and celebrities throughout its half-century existence such as Balanchine, Baryshnikov, Gerald Arpino, Charlie Watts, Ron Wood, Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Studs Terkel, Joe Mantegna, Jean Claude Van Damme, Cisley Tyson, Billy Zane, John Kapellos, Blythe Danner, Jean Reno, Lauren Flutton, John Cusack, Jim Belushi and many others; and
WHERAS, George Mitchell also owned the former Neon Greek Village restaurant, famous as the only restaurant in Greektown that offered live performances such as belly dancing, singing, folk dancing and live bands. It was also well known for its special preparation of traditional Greek fare. Not only did he own those two successful, known businesses but he owned other restaurants from small to large throughout the Chicago area; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has informed this august body of the passing of this exceptionally successful and respected businessman; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled this 28th Day of July, 2011 AD, do hereby express our sincere sorrow at the passing of George Mitchell and extend our deepest condolences to his family and all those whose lives he touched.
