RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Mavis Batey has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-two; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Petworth, England Mavis Batey was the loving wife of the late Keith; and
WHEREAS, Mavis Batey was the much-adored mother of three children; and
WHEREAS, Mavis Batey was a renowned secret code breaker who helped ensure the success of the D-Day invasion during World War II; and
WHEREAS, In late 1941, along with two colleagues, Mavis Batey broke the enigma machine, a highly complex electromechanical encryption device used by the German military and its allies to send coded messages; and
WHEREAS, Mavis Batey was also credited with decoding a communication that led to the Royal Navy's defeat of the Italian Navy during the Battle of Cape Matapan off the Greek coast; and
WHEREAS, President Dwight D. Eisenhower later credited the work of the English code breakers with shortening the war by two years; and
WHEREAS, A renowned author and English garden historian, Mavis Batey was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Mavis Batey serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Mavis Batey will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Mavis Batey imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of December, 2013, do hereby commemorate Mavis Batey for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mavis Batey.
