RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Alan Bean has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean was the loving husband for 40 years of Leslie; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean was the much-adored father of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean was a native of Wheeler, Texas and earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas in 1955; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean graduated from Navy Test Pilot School and became one of 14 trainees selected by NASA for its third group of astronauts in 1963; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean was an Apollo 12 astronaut and the fourth man to walk on the moon; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean later commanded the second crewed flight of Skylab in 1973 on which he orbited the earth for 59 days; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean retired from NASA in 1981 and devoted much of his time to his work as an accomplished artist which reflected his memories of space exploration; and
WHEREAS, The courage, hard work and dedication of Alan Bean serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Alan Bean to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Alan Bean was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Alan Bean imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Alan Bean for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
