RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory was the loving and devoted husband of Lillian; and
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory was the much-adored father of ten, grandfather of sixteen, and great-grandfather of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory was a legendary comedian and civil rights activist who broke barriers in the 1960s and became one of the first African Americans to perform at white clubs; and
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory was a groundbreaker in comedy where he satirized segregation and racial injustice to uplift the political, economic, social and cultural issues that impacted the African American community; and
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory helped pioneer black social activities in the marches and rallies of the civil rights movement, as well as the opposition toward the Vietnam War and police brutality; and
WHEREAS, Dick Gregory was influential in the Chicagoland civil rights movement where he ran against former Mayor Richard J. Daley as a write-in candidate in 1967; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dick Gregory serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dick Gregory to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dick Gregory imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of September, 2017, do hereby commemorate Dick Gregory for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
