Salute to Mary Monica Joria
WHEREAS, On October 8, 2013, Mary Monica Joria will join the burgeoning ranks of this city's centenarians; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1913 as Mary Monica Dunne in the center of the Irish Catholic immigrant society that flourished on the South Side of this city, she attended the Visitation Parish Grammar School and matriculated to Visitation's High School for Girls before graduating from St. Xavier University in 1935. She earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Loyola University in 1936; and
WHEREAS, Upon completing her education, Mary Monica Joria worked for the Chicago Welfare Department in Relief Administration and was later employed by Catholic Charities and the Juvenile Court before retirement; and
WHEREAS, Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Chicago Police Officer Eugene Joria in 1948. Their union was blessed with two sons who followed their parents' example by devoting their careers to public service; and
WHEREAS, Even in retirement, Mary Monica Joria, now a resident of Smith Village, on West 113th Place, continued her public service by working to help others in her retirement community; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward has apprised this august body of Mary Monica Joria's remarkable and significant milestone; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 11th day of September, 2013 AD, do hereby salute Mary Monica Joria for her many decades as a devoted public servant to the citizens of Ch|cjigo,0 extend our very best wishes as she enters her 100th year, and proffer our prayers^for ~ ~?
