RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, George Kokines has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-two; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, George Kokines was a renowned Chicago artist who won widespread acclaim as an abstract expressionist painter; and
WHEREAS, Raised on the North Side, George Kokines served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, George Kokines graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago and rose to prominence in the 1960s; and
WHEREAS, Known for his bold, colorful works of art, George Kokines spent much of his career in New York City before returning to Chicago in 2005 where he painted in his Rogers Park studio; and
WHEREAS, George Kokines' paintings are exhibited in Chicago and New York City as well as in Argentina and Italy; and
WHEREAS, George Kokines taught art at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison; and
WHEREAS, George Kokines was an artist of immense talent and a beloved colleague to many; and
WHEREAS, To his daughter, Anna Miller, and his beloved family, George Kokines imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twelfth day of December, 2012, do hereby commemorate George Kokines for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of George Kokines.
