Title: Recognition extended to Cornell Wrightington for heroic actions

WHEREAS, The heroic actions of Cornell Wrightington thwarted a rape attempt in the Gold Coast neighborhood during the early morning hours on June 23, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Aldermen Edward M. Burke and Brendan Reilly; and
WHEREAS, Cornell Wrightington was working the overnight shift as a doorman at a condo building at 30 West Oak Street when he noticed a young woman proceed past his building while talking on her cellphone; and
WHEREAS, Cornell Wrightington then saw a man cross the street and begin to follow the woman from a distance; and
 
WHEREAS, When the woman cut through a nearby alley the man pursued her; and
WHEREAS, Cornell Wrightington, fearing for the safety of the woman immediately ran from his post inside the condo building and rushed to the alley; and
 
WHEREAS, Upon arrival Cornell Wrightington discovered the man had thrown the woman to the ground, jumped on top of her and was attempting to assault the victim; and
WHEREAS, When Cornell Wrightington ordered the man to release the woman, the attacker fled north on Maple Street; and
WHEREAS, Cornell Wrightington offered the woman assistance and walked her to the condo lobby where he alerted authorities by calling 911; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago Police Department suspects that the attacker is also responsible for assaulting another woman on June 17 two blocks away from the condo building; and
WHEREAS, If not for the alertness and speedy intervention of Cornell Wrightington the woman would not have been saved from this attack; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-sixth day of June, 2013, do hereby recognize Cornell Wrightington for his decisive and heroic intervention; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Cornell Wrightington.
