RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, on February 16, 2018, the people of Lithuania celebrated the Centennial of Independence, and restoration of statehood of Lithuania; and
WHEREAS, On February 16,1918, the Lithuanian Council, as the sole representation of the Lithuanian nation, signed the Act of Independence, declaring the Lithuanian State, by renouncing all previous state ties, was restored; and
WHEREAS, The Act of Independence was signed by twenty signatories at 26 Pilies Street in Vilnius; and
WHEREAS, The Act declared the restoration of an independent and democratic state arranged on the democratic foundations with the capital city of Vilnius, and separating the state from all public ties it had ever had with other nations; and
WHEREAS, The City of Chicago is proud to have shared a Sister City relationship with Vilnius since 1993, a mutually beneficial friendship and partnership based on a shared embrace of values; and now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of January, 2019, hereby officially commemorate Lithuania's 100th Anniversary of Independence; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Consulate General of Lithuania in Chicago.
