RESOLUTION HONORING CHRIST TABERNACLE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF AUSTIN
WHEREAS, Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, in the Austin neighborhood has been an essential part ofthe community for many decades, and celebrates their fiftieth anniversary this year; and
WHEREAS, Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church started with humble beginnings, when forth-four families from Gethsemane Star organized a church, meeting in the basement of Stone Temple Baptist Church on West Douglas Boulevard; and
WHEREAS, the Thompson Community Singers, delighting the community with their gift of music, under the direction ofthe late Revered Milton R. Brunson, rehearsed in the space shared with the church; and
WHEREAS, after seeing steadfast dedication to the Lord and leadership from Revered Brunson, the church asked him to become the Pastor of Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, which he graciously accepted; and
WHEREAS, after quickly outgrowing their space because of their booming congregation, the church moved to 4244 W. Madison Avenue, where they gained notoriety across Chicago and the surrounding areas for their morning radio broadcast every Sunday nigh, and in 1976, with a congregation of 700, the church moved to 854 N. Central; and
WHEREAS, Revered Milton was called home on April 1, 1997 after serving as Pastor for thirty-three years, and the church has continued in his tradition of love, hope and faith, continuing to build upon the original values ofthe church's establishment, and providing a place of worship and acceptance for the community; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this sixth day of October 2014, do hereby extend our warmest congratulations to the Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church of Austin on their fiftieth anniversary, and asks the entire city of Chicago and 29th Ward community to join in the celebration of this joyous occasion.
