RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin was the loving and devoted wife of the late Jack; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin was the much-adored mother of seven and the grandmother of eighteen to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The granddaughter of Irish immigrants, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin was raised near Division Street and Austin Avenue on the Far West Side; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin was the sister of the late Grace Anne and the late Reverend Andrew J. Greeley; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin forged a reputation as an educator, author, lecturer and activist; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin taught religious studies at DePaul University and the Institute for Pastoral Studies at Loyola University and was an instructor at the University of Dayton; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin was the first Catholic woman to enroll in the doctoral degree program at the University of Chicago Divinity School; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin was active in charities that fight famine and traveled to Bangladesh to organize a textile-weaving cooperative to help women financially support their families; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Mary Jule Greeley Durkin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Mary Jule Greeley Durkin imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of December, 2017, do hereby commemorate Mary Jule Greeley Durkin for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
