A Resolution Honoring Lester A. Goodman on his 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, Lester A. Goodman, one of Chicago's living legends, turned an impressive one hundred years old on July 4th, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Born in Chicago, Lester has gifted Chicagoans with his extraordinary love of and talent for dance for nearly 90 years; and
WHEREAS, Lester studied architectural drawing in high school which led to a job with the City of Chicago's Zoning Department. He left City employment at the age of 20 to pursue his love of professional dance; and
WHEREAS, Lester experienced tremendous success dancing professionally, appearing frequently on television and performing in some of the most famous clubs and theaters internationally, even making it to the famed theaters on Broadway in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Lester never forgot to pass his gift on to the next generation, founding the well-respected Joseph Holmes Modern Dance Company and working as a teacher, producer and choreographer, which included a short stint working on dance routines for the world famous Temptations; and
WHEREAS, As a resident of the City for one hundred years, Lester has witnessed countless monumental events in our City's history including: the opening of the Goodman Theater, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, the opening of the first McDonald's franchise, Chicago's first female mayor, Jane M. Byrne, the City's first African American Mayor, Harold Washington, United States President-Elect Barack Obama's victory speech in Grant Park and many more; and
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the City Council members of the City of Chicago hereby assembled on this the 29th day of July, 2015, A.D., do hereby honor Lester A. Goodman on the occasion of his 100th Birthday; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Lester A. Goodman and his family.
