SALUTE TO GINA FERGUSON. SOUTH LOOP WOMAN OF THE YEAR


WHEREAS, On March 9, 2013, the Greater South Loop Association held their First Annual Women's Tea in celebration of Women's History Month and to honor Gina Ferguson, an outstanding nurse practitioner and noteworthy member of her community, as their first Woman of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Gina Ferguson was born and raised in the south suburbs, receiving a Bachelors degree in nursing from Lewis University as well as a Masters degree in Health Law at Loyola Law School, and has been a nurse since 1992. In 1999, she joined the staff of Northwestern Memorial Hospital where, in 2005, she helped start the cardiac transplant program. She provides and coordinates care for patients after heart surgery in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, working closely with the cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists and anesthesiologists. Gina is also a member of the cardiac procurement team and coordinates care for hospitalized heart transplant patients; and

WHEREAS, In 2008, Gina Ferguson started training as a triathlete. In 2012, she participated in Ironman Arizona where she raised money for the National Kidney Foundation because father, Dennis, suffered from chronic kidney disease for more than a decade. That same year, she lobbied on Capitol Hill with the National Kidney Foundation for extended Medicare for immunosuppressive drug coverage. Seven days after returning from Washington, D.C., she donated a kidney to her father.

WHEREAS, In February, 2013 Gina Ferguson was a recipient of the Donate Life Champion Award given to an athlete who has made a difference in organ donation; and

WHEREAS, Gina Ferguson has lived in the South Loop for more than 7 years, where she can be found training at Monkey Bar Gym located in that community. She also continues to volunteer for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois and Donate Life America.
