RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-six; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of Great Britain, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor was the loving and devoted husband of the late Joan; and
WHEREAS, A British travel writer, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor wrote more than half a dozen books and was the recipient of numerous literary awards; and
WHEREAS, Always drawn to adventure, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor walked from Holland to what is now Istanbul at the age of eighteen; and
WHEREAS, A Major in the British Army, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor captured a German general in Nazi-occupied Crete during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Characterized by elegant prose and a fine sense of place and character, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor's books inspired generations of travel writers worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends, and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor.
