RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Dr. John F. Mullan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Chicago, Dr. John F. Mullan was a widely admired member of the medical community and the loving husband of Vivian; and

WHEREAS, Dr. John F. Mullan was the much-adored father of Dr. Joan, Dr. John and Dr. Brian and the grandfather of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born on a farm in County Derry, Northern Ireland, Dr. John F. Mullan was a pioneering neurosurgeon who developed revolutionary procedures, including minimally-invasive techniques, that have become common practice; and

WHEREAS, Dr. John F. Mullan joined the University of Chicago's medical faculty in 1955 and played an instrumental role in creating the University's Brain Research Institute where he was Director from 1964 to 1984; and

WHEREAS, A superb physician and mentor, Dr. John F. Mullan served as section chief of neurological surgery from 1967 until his retirement in 1992; and

WHEREAS, During his long and highly distinguished career, Dr. John F. Mullan authored more than 180 scholarly papers; and

WHEREAS, Known as "Sean," Dr. John F. Mullan will be remembered by his colleagues and patients for his wisdom, empathy and personal warmth; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. John F. Mullan serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. John F. Mullan to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Dr. John F. Mullan was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
