RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Chicago Sun-Times photographer John J. Kim and reporters Mark Konkol and Frank Main were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting On April 18, 2011; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this honor by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1917, the Pulitzer Prize honors recipients who have excelled in the fields of journalism, literature and musical composition; and
WHEREAS, The category of Local Reporting recognizes those who have distinguished themselves by illuminating significant local issues or concerns affecting communities; and
WHEREAS, The most prestigious honor in American journalism was awarded to John J. Kim, Mark Konkol and Frank Main for their series, "Why They Won't Stop Shooting in Chicago", which documented the devastating impact of violence in gang-torn Chicago neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, The announcement marked the first Pulitzer Prize awarded to the Chicago Sun-Times since 1989, and its eighth such award overall; and
WHEREAS, Through their diligent year-long investigation, the award-winning journalists sought not only to inform the public of the realities of violence, but also to shed light on troubling trends in the City of Chicago; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourth day of May, 2011, do hereby congratulate John J. Kim, Mark Konkol and Frank Main, and the entire staff of the Chicago Sun-Times on this achievement in journalistic excellence; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to John J. Kim, Mark Konkol and Frank Main of the Chicago Sun-Times
