Hispanic Heritage Month Resolution

WHEREAS, from September 15 to October 15 every year the United States and the city of Chicago celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month;

WHEREAS, September 15th was chosen as the starting point for the great celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five countries, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico celebrates their independence on September 16th, Chile on the 18th and Belize on September 21st;

WHEREAS, the Hispanic community in metropolitan Chicago numbers over 2 million people, or over 20 percent of the region's total population. This represents the largest ethnic and racial group in metropolitan Chicago;

WHEREAS, the celebration seems to have additional meaning this year with Donald Trump serving in the White House, Jeff Sessions serving as Attorney General and the repeal of DACA;

WHEREAS, Hispanic culture plays a key role in American culture today and has since the first days of the United States of America;

WHEREAS, New attacks on Hispanic culture will be met with the love and compassion that has served as a hallmark of various cultures for thousands of years;

WHEREAS, Hispanics have played an especially large role in Chicago with Latino businesses reviving commercial districts, and Latino students being the largest ethnicity in Chicago Public Schools;

WHEREAS, Hispanic students recently earned over $100,000 in scholarships from the Latino Caucus of the Chicago City Council;

WHEREAS, The future of Chicago, Illinois and the United States are very bright, so long as Americans of all nationalities continue to embrace Hispanic culture as a part of American culture;

WHEREAS, regardless of who serves in the White House and Attorney General's office, we will continue to celebrate the Latinos that help make this City and Country great;

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor, the Latino Caucus and all the members of the City Council...
