SALUTE TO STEPHEN KUKENSIS
WHEREAS, On September 21,2010, Stephen Kukensis, an outstanding citizen and member of his community, became a hero; and
WHEREAS Stephen Kukensis, a Foster Ave. Beach concession stand operator, heard screams from the beach-house rest room 20 to 30 feet away from his place of business just as he was opening for the day. He quickly determined there was no time to call the police so he rushed into the restroom to find a man apparently sexually assaulting a woman in one of the rest room stalls; and
WHEREAS, Stephen Kukensis forced his way into the stall and pulled the offender off of the woman. The perpetrator punched him and appeared to reach for a knife or gun but turned away instead and fled the scene; and
WHEREAS, When approached by another man as he left the rest room, the assailant said that he was with the FBI, but the man didn't believe him and followed on a bike as he proceeded to walk south along the beach and was able to point out the attacker to police; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary Ann Smith, Alderman of the 48th Ward has apprised this august body of the heroism of Stephen Kukensis who put himself in harms way for the sake of a stranger; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this 9th Day of February, 2011 AD, do hereby salute Stephen Kukensis for his valorous and extraordinary action and commend him for his exemplary deed.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Stephen Kukensis.
