RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Dr. Irving Zitman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 99; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A longtime resident of the Streeterville neighborhood, Dr. Irving Zitman was a widely admired member of the medical community and the loving husband of the late Florence; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Irving Zitman was the much-adored father of Marylou, Karen, Susan and Nancy, the grandfather of 11 and the great­grandfather of 19 to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Irving Zitman enjoyed a long and highly successful career as a physician and was a former Chief of Staff and President of Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, The son of Ukrainian immigrant parents who fled Jewish persecution, Dr. Irving Zitman was born on a ranch in Cheyenne, Wyoming; and

WHEREAS, In the mid-1920s, Dr. Irving Zitman moved with his parents to Chicago where they settled on the Northwest Side; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Irving Zitman graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign and served his country stateside in the United States Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge, Dr. Irving Zitman set up a private medical practice in the Garland Building in the Loop and cared for his patients at Michael Reese Hospital which he led for a term during the 1960s; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Irving Zitman retired in the late 1980s, but remained professionally active by reviewing medical claims for the Social Security office in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Irving Zitman serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. Irving Zitman to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
