RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 65; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Winnetka, the Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., was a Cook County Circuit Court Judge and the loving husband for forty-three years of Kathleen, nee Fitzgerald; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., was the much-adored father of Elizabeth, Melissa and Catherine, and the grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, The scion of a widely known political family, the Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., was the eldest son of Helen, nee Geary, and the late Illinois Secretary of State Michael J. Howlett, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., was the fond brother of Robert, Edward, Catherine, Mary Christine and Helen; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., graduated from St. John's University and University of Notre Dame Law School and clerked in federal courts in Chicago and for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., enjoyed a varied career and briefly worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office before entering private practice; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., was selected by Circuit Court Judges as an Associate Judge and served in that capacity from 1983 until 1986; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., returned to the bench in 2005 when he was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, In 2006 the Honorable Michael J. Howlett, Jr., won election as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County and was retained for another six-year term in 2012; and
