MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR ATHANASIOS "TOM" CHIAMPAS
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this Chamber learned of the death of Mr. Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39* Ward; and
WHEREAS, Tom was a native of Nestani, Greece and a widely admired member of his community. He and his beloved wife, Katina Chiampas, nee Stratigou, had three children, the Hon. Peggy Chiampas, Ourania "Rani" (Frank) Prokos and George (Lori) Chiampas, D.O. He and was also a proud "Papou" to his grandchildren, Amanda, Evangelos, Athansios "Tom," Katia and Athanasios "Athan," and many nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, He was proud to have earned his Master's Degree in the Arts from Northeastern University in 1973. Dedicated to his faith, Tom served as a Cantor at many churches in the Chicago area and was the former Secretary of the Metropolis — Diocese. Tom was also honored to receive the St. Andrew's Service Cross, for his dedicated commitment to the service of Christ in the Greek Orthodox Church; and
WHEREAS, An active member of the Chicago Greek American Community, Tom taught many students at Greek School. He was also the founder and co-host, with his wife Katina, of the Hellenic American Radio Hour, and a long standing member of the Central Society Tsipianiton of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Tom touched the lives of all who knew him through his love and gende spirit. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this first day of November, 2016, do hereby extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Athanasios Chiampas; and
