RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Mitchell has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 85; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Mitchell was an Apollo 14 astronaut and one of only twelve men to set foot on the moon; and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Mitchell was the lunar module pilot on America's third lunar mission that lasted from January 31 to February 9, 1971; and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Mitchell helped to collect 95 pounds of samples during a nine-hour walk on the moon's surface; and

 

WHEREAS, Raised on a cattle ranch in New Mexico, Edgar Mitchell joined the United States Navy and earned a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining NASA; and

 

WHEREAS, After leaving NASA in 1972, Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences and dedicated his life to exploring physics, the mysteries of the mind and unexplained phenomena; and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Mitchell authored the book "The Way of the Explorer" in which he wrote, "There was a sense that our presence as space travelers, and the existence of the universe itself, was not accidental but that there was an intelligent process at work"; and

 

WHEREAS, The heroic bravery and dedication of Edgar Mitchell serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Mitchell was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Edgar Mitchell imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate Edgar Mitchell for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Edgar Mitchell.
