MEMORIAL RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SPORTY THE DOG
WHEREAS, Sporty, the well-known leash-carrying golden retriever who brightened the days of thousands of Chicagoans, passed away on November 14, 2019 after a battle with lymphoma; and
WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of Sporty's passing by the Honorable Brendan Reilly, Alderman ofthe 42nd Ward; and
WHEREAS, After retiring from agility and show competitions, with a couple of championships under his collar, Sporty found a loving home when David Duncan adopted him; and
WHEREAS, Sporty joined David in Chicago to take the show on the road - or at least the sidewalk; and
WHEREAS, Sporty quickly learned his way around River North and the Loop, and one day decided to carry his own leash during his regular walks around the town with David along for the ride; and
WHEREAS, Truly a neighborhood celebrity, Sporty regularly stopped on the street for pictures, head pats, and ear rubs from adoring fans, enjoyed water and treats left out for him by local businesses, and made friends everywhere he went; and
WHEREAS, Sporty's golden coat, showmanship, and self-walking abilities garnered nearly 80,000 online followers from around the globe; and
WHEREAS, Sporty's infectious smile and tail wags made him an icon in our community, with his fans and friends expressing their love for him by raising over $30,000 to help cover his medical expenses; and
WHEREAS, Sporty remains a champion in the hearts and minds of everyone who was lucky enough to have met him, and he will always be remembered as a very good boy; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here this fifteenth day of January, 2020, do hereby extend our most heartfelt condolences to David Duncan and all of Sporty's friends; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to David Duncan as a sign of our gratitude and respect.
