RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Hypocrites Theater Chicago is a local theater company with headquarters at the Den Theater located at 1333 N. Milwaukee Avenue in the 1st Ward; and
WHEREAS, The Hypocrites are at the forefront of the thriving cultural revolution taking place in the Wicker Park neighborhood by creating immersive theater experiences around historic and original work; and
WHEREAS, The Hypocrites is the leading storefront theater company that blends emotionally resonant theater and humor in its interpretations of historic plays and productions of new work; and
WHEREAS, The Hypocrites Theatre Chicago performs for an audience of 18,000 people in Chicago each year and it is gaining recognition nationally as productions are increasingly staged outside of Chicago, including at venues in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London; and
WHEREAS, The Hypocrites original work All Our Tragic is an example of how a small theater company pushes itself and the art form. The show is a mash-up of all 32 surviving Greek tragedies compiled into a single, 12-hour show. It featured the Hypocrites signature blend of serious, traditional theater, and comedic sensibilities; and
WHEREAS, The Hypocrites Theater Chicago was one of 14 art groups to win the prestigious MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions in 2016; and
WHEREAS, The MacArthur Award has been presented annually since 2006 to nonprofit organizations across the country and around the world that demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness; and
WHEREAS, According to MacArthur, the Award is not only recognition for past leadership and success but also an investment in the future and to qualify, organizations must demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness; have reached a critical or strategic point in their development; show strong leadership and stable financial management; have previously received MacArthur support; and engage in work central to one of MacArthur's core programs; now, therefore,
