RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Wheaton, Dr. Melvin G. Holli was a prominent educator, author and historian; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Dr. Melvin G. Holli enjoyed skiing, fishing and a host of outdoor activities as well as a lifelong appreciation of his Finnish roots; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli earned his master's and doctorate degrees in American History from the University of Michigan; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli began teaching history at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1965 where he established and directed an urban historical collection; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli was a popular member of the faculty and served as Chairman of the Department of History from 1991 to 1995; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli wrote or co-edited 18 books, including a biographical dictionary of American mayors and four books on Chicago mayors; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli won the History Award from the Society of Midland Authors and the Best Book Award from the Illinois Political Science Foundation; and
WHEREAS, Following a long and illustrious career, Dr. Melvin G. Holli retired in 2003; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Melvin G. Holli serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. Melvin G. Holli to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Melvin G. Holli was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
