WHEREAS, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Springfield, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan was a longtime political adviser and the loving husband of Antoinette "Ann," nee Hammond; and

WHEREAS, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan was the much-adored father of Lynn, Cheri and the late Dan, the dear brother of Neta, and the grandfather of seven; and

WHEREAS, Born in Milford, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan was the son of State Representative Joe Callahan and his wife, Helen; and

WHEREAS, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan graduated from Illinois College and worked as a reporter for the Illinois State Register where for many years he wrote a daily political column; and

WHEREAS, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan left journalism to work as a Deputy Press Secretary for Governor Samuel H. Shapiro, Governor Otto Kerner and Lt. Governor Paul Simon; and

WHEREAS, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan devoted much of his career to serving as the Honorable Alan Dixon's Chief of Staff during his years as Illinois State Treasurer, Illinois Secretary of State and United States Senator; and

WHEREAS, A former college baseball player, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan was Director of Government Relations for Major League Baseball; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his retirement, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan remained active as a political adviser to many public servants; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Era Eugene "Gene" Callahan will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
