RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Long a center for the Arts, Chicago's rich literary history includes the names of legends such as Saul Bellows, Studs Terkel, Carl Sandberg, and Nelson Algren; and
WHEREAS, As a child, Chicago's native son Graham Moore grew up with aspirations of being a Hollywood writer, and practiced his Academy Awards acceptance speech in the mirror with a comb; and
WHEREAS, The young writer's dreams recently came true as Graham Moore won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film "The Imitation Game," based on Andrew Hodges' book "Alan Turing: The Enigma; and
WHEREAS, "The Imitation Game" screenplay centers on Alan Turing, the brilliant British mathematician largely responsible for cracking the complex Enigma code used by the Germans in World War II to transmit strategic information; and
WHEREAS, Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, "The Imitation Game" gained critical acclaim and has taken in an impressive $205 million worldwide at the box office; and
WHEREAS, Graham Moore is a self-professed computer nerd who went to space camp, and Alan Turing was a "legend, a heroic figure" with whom he found a kinship with; and
WHEREAS, Prior to writing his award winning screenplay, Graham Moore also wrote the 2010 novel "The Sherlockian," about Arthur Conan Doyle which tapped into his love of research and history and made it to the New York Times best-seller list; and
WHEREAS; Growing up in Lincoln Park, Graham Moore attended high school at the University of Chicago Lab School and went on to study at Columbia University during which time he became the arts editor of the Columbia Spectator, worked as a bike messenger and was a sound engineer at B.B. King's club; and
WHEREAS, Graham Moore's family includes his mother Susan Sher, the former chief of staff for first lady Michelle Obama, his father Gary Moore, a Chicago defense lawyer, and his stepfather Neil Cohen, a Cook County Circuit Court judge; and
