Expression of sympathy and support for victims and families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On the afternoon of February 14, 2018, a lone gunman carried out a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, leaving fourteen students and three educators dead; and
WHEREAS, Fourteen other shooting victims were rushed to area hospitals after sustaining serious gunshot wounds; and
WHEREAS, The perpetrator entered the school building armed with a semiautomatic rifle and multiple magazines intent on carrying out what became one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this tragic event by Alderman Edward M. Burke and Alderman Patrick O'Connor; and
WHEREAS, Amid the chaos, a geography teacher, Scott Beigel gave his life as he unlocked a classroom to allow students to take refuge from the gunman; and
WHEREAS, At the same time, Aaron Feis, an assistant football coach and security guard, sacrificed his life as he shielded two students from gunfire and certain death; and
WHEREAS, School Athletic Director Chris Hixon was shot and killed in an attempt to shield fleeing students after hearing the first sound of gunfire; and
WHEREAS, Student Peter Wang, a Junior ROTC cadet, was shot and killed as he helped students escape the gunfire by holding an exit door open and directing students to safety. Peter was posthumously awarded the ROTC Medal for Heroism and admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point; and
WHEREAS, We honor the heroism of Scott Beigel, Aaron Feis, Chris Hixon, and Peter Wang, who sacrificed their lives to safeguard others; and
