SALUTE TO SUSAN M BUCHANAN

WHEREAS, At the end of the Chicago Public Schools academic year, Susan M Buchanan, an outstanding educational leader and respected member of her community, will be retiring after more than three decades; and

WHEREAS, Susan M Buchanan has lived her entire life in the West Lawn Community. She attended Richard Lee Elementary School and Marie Sklodowska Curie Metropolitan High School. Susan attended Illinois State. University and majored in Special Education; and

WHEREAS, Susan started her teaching career in 1988. In 1990, she began as a Special Education Teacher at Louis Pasteur Elementary School. She has held that position for the past thirty-one years. During her time at Louis Pasteur Elementary School, she served on the Local School Council and as a Delegate for the Chicago Teachers Union; and

WHEREAS, In 2012, Susan became a founding member ofthe Southwest Education Advisory Committee. The committee was instrumental in creating a new middle school on the southwest side. Susan spearheaded the campaign to name the school after Robert J Richardson, a local Korean War Veteran and ROTC instruction in the Chicago Public Schools. The Southwest Education Advisory Committee was instrumental in securing Sor Juana Elementary School, the first on the southwest side to offer a Classical and STEAM program; and

WHERAS, Susan always had a strong interest in working with children with special needs. While attending high school, she started the first Brownie Troop of eight girls at Misericordia South. For three years, she spent every Wednesday evening with her Troop. In 2008, she reconnected with a former student who lives in a group home for adults with mental and physical disabilities; in 2010, Susan became her legal guardian; and

WHEREAS, Susan plans to visit Borneo, take road trips, and find volunteer opportunities in the community: and
