RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Martin McGuinness has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
WHEREAS; The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Martin McGuinness was a former Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) leader turned politician and peacemaker; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Martin McGuinness was one of the main architects of the Good Friday Agreement which cemented the peace process that brought stability to Northern Ireland; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Martin McGuinness was a Sinn Fein leader who served as a Member of Parliament for Mid-Ulster from 1997 to 2013; and
WHEREAS, Following the Assembly election of 2007, the Honorable Martin McGuinness became the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, a position in which he served until January of 2017; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Martin McGuinness was Minister of Education from 1999 to 2002; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Martin McGuinness was Sinn Fein's candidate for President in the 2011 election; and
WHEREAS, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams called the Honorable Martin McGuinness a "passionate republican who worked tirelessly for peace and reconciliation and for the re-unification of his country"; and
WHEREAS, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said the passing of the Honorable Martin McGuinness represented a "significant loss, not only to politics in Northern Ireland, but to the wider political landscape on this island and beyond"; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Martin McGuinness serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Martin McGuinness imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
