RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Joan Mondale has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-three; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joan Mondale was the loving wife of former United States Vice President Walter Mondale; and

WHEREAS, Joan Mondale was the much-adored mother of the Honorable Theodore, William and the late Eleanor; and

WHEREAS, Joan Mondale was affectionately known as "Joan of Art" for her lifelong advocacy of the arts; and

WHEREAS, Born in Eugene, Oregon, Joan Mondale was the daughter of the Reverend John Maxwell Adams, a Presbyterian minister and his wife, the former Eleanor Jane Hall; and

WHEREAS, Joan Mondale graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and after graduation worked at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and

WHEREAS, An artist and author, Joan Mondale was an accomplished potter and wrote the book, Letters From Japan, chronicling her life overseas as the wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Japan; and

WHEREAS, Joan Mondale served on the boards of the Minnesota Orchestra, Walker Arts Center, Macalester College and the National Portrait Gallery; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Joan Mondale serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Joan Mondale will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Joan Mondale imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of March, 2014, do hereby commemorate Joan Mondale for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Joan/Mondale.
