RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, A beloved religious leader who knew six Archbishops of Chicago, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-four; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Aldermen Edward M. Burke and Brendan Reilly; and

WHEREAS, Born in Chicago to Irish immigrant parents from County Kerry, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne faithfully served the Catholic Church and the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago for seven decades; and

WHEREAS, The son of a Chicago police officer, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne was raised on the West Side and attended Resurrection and St. Mel elementary schools; and

WHEREAS, A graduate of Quigley Preparatory Seminary, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne earned a licentiate in sacred theology and a master's degree in history from the University of St. Mary of the Lake; and

WHEREAS, The Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 1, 1943, by Samuel Cardinal Stritch, and spent many fruitful years as a parish priest in Oak Park and Riverside; and

WHEREAS, As Pastor of Holy Name Cathedral, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne served twenty-three years in that position as he ministered to the faithful and the community; and

WHEREAS, Ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago in 1983, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne served as Episcopal Vicar for the Archdiocese of Chicago's Vicariate II; and

WHEREAS, In 1988 Bishop Lyne was appointed Vicar for Senior Priests and for twenty-five years directed his boundless energy and enthusiasm into caring for the elderly clergy of the Archdiocese; and

WHEREAS, In 1995 the title of Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus was bestowed on the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne; and

WHEREAS, A friend, mentor and role model, the Most Reverend Timothy J. Lyne shared "grace, mercy and peace" with everyone he encountered throughout his life and vocation; and
