RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Czech Republic and Slovakia celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia in 2018; and
WHEREAS, The country split into two sovereign states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in 1993 yet both countries will mark the anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The First Republic was officially declared on October 28,1918, when novelist Alois Jirasek read the Proclamation of the Independence of Czechoslovakia in front of the Saint Wenceslas statue at Wenceslas Square; and
WHEREAS, The declaration was drafted by Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and American sculptor Gutzon Borglum and presented to the United States government on October 17,1918; and
WHEREAS, The peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia came in the final days of World War I when the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart and it marked the first time since the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 that Bohemia was not under foreign rule; and
WHEREAS, During 2018, exhibits in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have proudly celebrated the rich history of Czechoslovakia and celebrations are being held across the world; and now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of January, 2019, hereby officially commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago.
