TRIBUTE TO THE LATE WALTER G. RIGBY, JR.
A resolution adopted by the City Council ofthe City of Chicago, sponsored by Alderman Debra L. Silverstein, 50th Ward -
WHEREAS, The members of the City Council are saddened to learn of the death of Walter G. Rigby, Jr. of West Rogers Park, Chicago, who passed away at home, surrounded by his family on July 27, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Walter G. Rigby Jr. was born on Chicago's North Side on January 19, 1935, and was the only child of Walter Sr. and Ruth. Walter graduated from Sullivan High School in 1953, and joined the U.S. Army where he served his country in America and Japan until his honorable discharge. He began working full-time for Bankers Life & Casualty in 1959 where he would remain until his retirement as senior claims adjuster in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Walter G. Rigby Jr. married Marie Elaine Carr in 1961, had four daughters by 1967 and, after a lot of hard work and overtime, bought a home in the 50th Ward in 1971. His family expanded in 1979 with the addition of his son. He cherished and cared for his family and home every single day; and
WHEREAS, Walter G. Rigby Jr. was a parishioner and major contributor to St. Henry Church where he also assisted in coaching boys' sports teams and volunteered his time helping out with church events and functions; and
WHEREAS, Walter G. Rigby JR. was an active and vital member of many charitable and civic organizations, including CAPS, Purple Heart, Misericordia, and Salvation Army. He attended beat and community meetings, as well as "sit-ins" with other residents on neighborhood corners to discourage criminal activity. He petitioned and rallied for parking permits, snow plowing, rodent control and street repairs. He did whatever he could to insure the streets were kept clean and made the community a safe and pleasant place to live; and
WHEREAS, Walter G. Rigby Jr. was always patient with, friendly, kind and giving to everyone he met. Tears were not only shed by family, friends and neighb...
