SALUTE TO ROBERT J. SMITH SR.
WHEREAS, Almighty God in His Infinite Wisdom has granted Robert J. Smith Sr. birth into eternity in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith Sr. graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1943. While he was in grade school his job was to get up early and put coal in the boiler to warm the water used to wash the hearses. He started the Smith-Corcoran funeral home business 65 years ago and, as of this day, it has expanded to numerous locations both in the city and the suburbs. He was known for his generosity as well as not charging a family who had lost a loved one in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith Sr. arranged the funeral of an infant who passed on from Sudden Death Infant Syndrome due to the parents being in shock of such an event, when they asked him for the bill, he replied: "There is no bill". He arranged countless funerals for people who lost their lives in Vietnam, World War II, Korea, both Gulf wars, and Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts; and
WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith Sr. will always be remembered for his generosity and loving nature towards people. He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughters, Jeanne Marie Jardien and Karen Smith; his son, Charles; his brother, Richard and five grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of the passing of Robert J. Smith Sr., by the Honorable Patrick J. Levar, Alderman of the 45lh Ward; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled on this 9th Day of February 2011 A.D., do hereby express our sincere sorrow on the passing of Robert J. Smith Sr. and extend our deepest condolences to his loving family and all those whose lives he touched.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Robert J. Smith Sr.
