WHEREAS, On June 16, 2015, members of the United States Marine Corps C Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division gathered to honor the memory and celebrate the life of Michael T. Badsing, the first Chicago Marine killed in Vietnam. They were joined at the ceremony by the USMC Current 224 Marine Honor Guard; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this occasion by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Michael T. Badsing was born July 2, 1945, to Emily and Edward Badsing of 4626 N. Lowell Ave; he graduated from St. Edward Grammar School in 1959 and attended St. Patrick and Schurz High Schools; and

WHEREAS, Michael volunteered to serve his country and joined the Marines in 1964, was promoted to PFC on March 16, 1964, and to Lance Corporal on March 1, 1965. His basic training was with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton and he received further training in machine guns and weaponry both crew-served and heavy; and

WHEREAS, Michael joined the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade and was assigned to the Weapons Platoon, C Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa. General Frederick J. Karch was given orders to float the unit; and then on March 8, 1965, to "Land the Landing Force" at Danang, Republic of Vietnam, the first tactical amphibious landing since Inchon in Korea almost 25 years earlier. The landing was a success and over the next 6 months 1/9 saw action all over I Corps; and

WHEREAS, While on patrol on September 5, 1965, Michael came under hostile fire and, at age 20 years and 1 month, was killed in action in Quang Nam Province, RVN. Michael was the first Chicago Marine killed in Vietnam and one often former St. Edward students killed in action in Vietnam; and
