RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 98; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb was the 43rd Governor of the State of Indiana; and

WHEREAS, A native of Hayden, Indiana, the Honorable Edgar Whitcomb enlisted in 1940 as a member of the United States Army Air Corps; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II when his base was overrun and survived harsh treatment as a prisoner of war; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb was first elected in 1950 to the Indiana State Senate; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb began a law practice after passing the bar exam in 1954 and in 1966 was elected Indiana Secretary of State; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb served as Governor from 1969 to 1973; and

WHEREAS, After leaving politics, the Honorable Edgar Whitcomb attempted to sail around the world until his boat ran aground on a reef near Egypt; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb returned to Indiana where he lived in a secluded log cabin along the Ohio River within the Hoosier National Forest; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Edgar Whitcomb serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Edgar Whitcomb to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Edgar Whitcomb was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his wife, Mary Evelyn, and his five children, the Honorable Edgar Whitcomb imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
