RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener was a founding member and first commander of the counter-terrorist force GSG 9 which was formed as a response to German security services' failure to prevent the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich; and

WHEREAS, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener led a German police counter-terrorist unit raid that ended a 1977 hijacking of a Lufthansa plane in Somalia; and

WHEREAS, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener blew open the door of the plane and stormed the aircraft on a runway in Mogadishu, freeing 86 hostages without loss of life to civilians or German commandos; and

WHEREAS, Two terrorists were killed, a third fatally wounded and a fourth was taken alive in the daring raid; and

WHEREAS, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the West German Minister of State; and

WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener worked as a consultant to foreign countries and helped them establish counter terrorism units; and

WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2018, do hereby commemorate Brigadier General Ulrich Wegener for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
